NBC televises next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, went from the main seat of prime time custom: Bob Costas took the post for 24 years, was replaced by Mike Sirico, who joined the network last May.
“It seems to me that the timing was right and it seemed like the right time for a while,” Costas said in an interview earlier this week, a prior NBC notice planned “Today” Thursday.
“This is a good time to get away like I can,” he said.
Sirico God worked for ESPN for 25 years, and his versatile and play-by-play talented host made the best choice to succeed Coasts when NBC hired. He had a host day of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year. He also called for the NFL and Notre Dame game and has hosted the US Open golf tournament.
“I know Bob will not stay in business for 20 years,” Sirico said in an interview, “but I do not know if they will vote for me or when it will happen.”
Olympic Games since 1988
Costas, long-term as the prime time host Jim McKay remembers that coverage or hosted 10 Olympic Games for ABC Sports. Costas described the experience as long as NBC’s commitment to the Olympics in the middle of the sports portfolio and develop a high-rated schedule that appeals to a broad demographic, especially for women. The network has used billions of dollars to use all the Olympic Games since 1988 and all Winter Games since 2002.
NBC’s late night coasts host the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea when Bryant Gumbel is prime time. Costas took office in prime time in 1992 when the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. The only hole hosting the inaugural cv came when CBS Television Winter in 1992, 1994 and 1998.
“The 11-time Olympic Games will not be touched,” said Sirico, 50, who refused to queue, he will be if he is discussing the prime time position in 2032.
“I hope they call me back to the other,” he said. “I’m just focusing on South Korea.”
Costas, 64, made the decision before the Rio Games which will be the last Olympic Games host prime time.
“Rio is a cornerstone moment,” he said. “Michael Phelps is the finish, so Usain Bolt and Simone Biles were born.” There were moments that seemed like a closing for me, and it seemed like a good time to give up. ”
He said that in the last 24 years, the role of the Olympic Games has changed. The increase in the number of events and the need for an audience that business has time to create and to reduce the supply to take into account the activities of trials
I do not get bored with it, but change over time in the form of a little, “he said. At first it was over free wheel and there is more room for me to use. And it’s still well supplied over the years. ”
Rio Games Cream served two years before the Winterspelen Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the experience of real viral conjunctivitis in his eyes prevented him from sky (and largely in a dark room) for six days, Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira filling.
“If this is going to be the last Olympics, I want to do more,” he said. His contract does him if he was at work, and he said he would remain one of NBC’s not Mr. Sirico is in place.
Coasts not only abandoned when the NBC prime time series, it is also to reduce the workload of the whole network. He no longer recommends “Night Football in America” for the pre-game program that aired prior to the “Sunday Night Football” broadcast network. He hosted the Triple Crown of horse races this year but in the future would be wise in the Kentucky Derby, other than the horses competing for the Triple Crown Belmont Stakes. In which case he organized a race for Belmont. He next year to host the Super Bowl coverage, and at the same time Mr. Sirico Korea.
Costas is in a roll book of the same with Tom Brokaw, comments and positions at major events such as the Olympics or Super Bowl, or NBC programming, when breaking news as he did when Muhammad Ali died in the latter years. Network calls on a regular basis, Mr. Brokaw, former NBC “Nightly News” anchor, commenting on major events such as the presidential election.
Screw back scheduled NBC backs will have more time to enjoy his love of baseball with MLB Network, which he calls drama, documentaries and said, giving the hosts a roundtable presentation.
His decision to change his role on NBC comes as another major sportscaster cut or moved. Brent Musburger establish a relationship with ESPN, with his family, online network dedicated to sports betting information. Verne Lundquist are no longer calling the Football Southeast Conference on CBS. Of ESPN Chris Berman and play a limited role.
Costas prepared for the changes and also liked to remember when all he wanted to do NBC, he was called baseball games, talk show “Later,” helped the NBC magazine show, presented N.B.A. And N.F.L. Program and called the basketball game.
“And,” he said, “I was young then.”
